Matthew 4:18 "As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." ²⁰At once they left their nets and followed him."

Matthew chapter 4 gives us an interesting look at an illustration! Jesus used it when He called Peter and Andrew to the ministry.

As Jesus was walking beside the sea of Galilee, He saw Peter and his brother Andrew. Jesus noticed they were fishing and said "come follow me and I will make you fishers of men".

If you’re like me and you have done some fishing as a hobby, you know the joy of catching a fish. When I was much younger I loved to fish. I would get out early in the morning and off to the lake I would go. Living near the Pocono mountains has it’s blessings, if you like fishing in lakes, because there are many to choose from. I miss those days of living near lakes to fish in. I live near a big river now, but river fishing is different from lake fishing.

Fishing for men is also different. You have to use the Word of God, it reveals good and bad news for man. The Bible points out that we are helpless without God and that God is willing to help us, He will rescue us from ourselves. God wants us to be fishers of men, and He makes the fish (men) want to take the bait, He uses the bread of life that feeds them forever.

We have all heard the saying, give a man a fish and he has food for a day, but teach him how to fish and he has food for life. In looking at the Bible, we can see that God uses men to catch men, men that He Himself will teach how to be fishers of men. His method of fishing is different than the kind of fishing Peter and Andrew used for making a living. Just the same, God is in the business of going after men, out of His amazing love for us, He makes us fishers of men. And out of His amazing love for sinners, He gives them the desire to come to Him, through Jesus Christ our Lord! Are you a fisher of men?
